詞作者：查爾斯·科芬（Charles Coffin，1676年—1749年）是法國學者、教育家與著名的拉丁語聖詩作家。他於1736年出版了包含約百首拉丁語聖詩的著作《Hymni Sacri》，並對當年的《巴黎日課經》（Paris Breviary）修訂貢獻了大量詩作。
詞英譯：約翰•贊特拉(1837)。他在牛津基督聖體學院（Corpus Christi College, Oxford）接受教育，於1827年肆業。他在1831年領受聖職，並在1837年出任其出生地威特利（Witley）的主任牧師。同年他出版其第一冊取自拉丁文的翻譯詩集《原始教會的聖詩（The Hymns of the Primitive Church）》。四年後他整理該書重新出版。《約翰宣言歌》的英語首版就是在1837年面世。除此詩外，贊氏的翻譯留下不少經典名曲，例如《主是基礎歌（Christ is our corner-stone）》、《天上撒冷歌（Blessed City, heavenly Salem）》等。
